Star Wars Day

Happy Star Wars Day everyone! In honor of this most momentous day, check out this amazing digital art my brother has been working on for the occasion.

 photo star wars- luke.jpg

 photo star wars- hanampleia.jpg

Basically, he's painting over the image on the computer, and the incredible process takes days, but the end results are worth it. He produces such high-quality images that they can be printed on canvas up to 48" high x 108" wide. I recommend looking at the pieces up close here where you can zoom in to see the brush strokes. It's pretty cool! He also has a few other pieces available for purchase in addition to the two above including one of Darth Vader!  Enjoy!

And May the 4th be with you!

Amazing 3D Art

I saw this piece of art on Facebook the other day and I still can't stop staring at it. The piece is by Ramon Bruin, a self-taught Dutch artist. His 3D drawings are done with multiple pieces of paper and the illusion is in the photo, not the actual piece of art, and he uses props like pencils or himself to give the art more realism.

There was an article in the Huffington Post yesterday about his 3D art with some additional pieces and he's all over the Internet. Check out his other forms if art on his site as well.

Just Dance

terrible pictures, but these girls were amazing

I've been thinking and waiting and preparing to take ballet classes. The dance studio down my street had a recital this weekend and I found myself curious and reluctant at once. Curious for obvious reasons (like are these the kind of dance classes I really want to be taking), though I'm already painfully aware of what I'm missing; my body is in serious need of toning and flexibility. Reluctant becuase, well, no one wants to have to give up a dream they've had for so long, and I wanted to be a dancer from the time I was little. To have the opportunity to still learn ballet now, later in life, only to find out I might be terrible at it, would kind of shatter it for me. At least, that's what I think now. I haven't even taken a class yet.

So I sat there at the recital, watching these girls, these dancers that I do not know in awe of their grace and utter fearlessness. I sat there and couldn't look away. It felt like sending some unspoken wish or unlived dream, a connection to that dance floor that I cannot explain or ignore.

I'm convinced now I need to take these classes. I know I won't be a ballerina, but maybe I can develop some of that elegance and grace and have it with me wherever I go...

Sketchtravel

Yesterday my coworker handed me this book and told me to look at it from beginning to end before passing it along so the whole office can see it.

The original sketch book, auctioned off in 2011 in Belgium

Sketchtravel started as the idea of Gerald Guerlais and Dice Tsutsumi to pass around one sketchbook between mutual artists. The book became a world wide project that lasted over five years, traveled 75,000 miles, and included 71 artists (including the founders) in illustration, painting, animation, and comics. The main rule was that the book be passed along in person.

When the book was finished and auctioned off on October 17, 2011, it sold for over $97,000. The proceeds went to Room to Read, a charity that the artists chose, which opened five libraries (in Cambodia, Laos, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam) and published one new children's book in each country. The organization strives to "work in collaboration with communities and local governments across Asia and Africa to develop literary skills and a habit of reading among primary school children."

The mass production copy of the book was published by Chronicle Books and can now be purchased around the world. Each illustration is accompanied by a photo of the artist and a quote on their experience of being involved in the project. It also tells the whole story of how Sketchtravel started and the whole journey afterward. I can't even tell you how amazing this sketchbook is, you have to see all of these incredible drawings for yourself. But here's a little sneak peek (from Gallery Nucleus):

the cover page listing all the artists by Robert Kondo

one of my favorites by Jerome Opena. I can't stop looking at it.

My coworker pointed out that it would make a great coffee table book. I would have to agree, and I can't wait to buy my own copy.

Writer's Conference

art print from Kathy Jeffords on etsy

So I'll be heading off to the Loews Hotel in Hollywood tomorrow for the Writer's Digest West Conference where I'll be pitching my story to agents! I really only finalized my pitch last night so I have today to memorize it. Eek! I'm a little nervous. But I do feel really good about my pitch. And my story, which is technically not finished yet, is the strongest it's been since I first started writing it three years ago.

In a lot of ways I feel like my life could kind of explode just from attending this one event (no pressure), but I also know that no matter the outcome, as far as getting an agent goes, it will be a beneficial experience. This will be my first time attending a writer's conference, which is the other exciting thing about it. I'll be around other book geeks like me.

For those of you who don't know what goes on at a writer's conference, I'll tell you what my day tomorrow will consist of:

9a "Writing and Publishing Children's and Teen Books"
10:30a "Six Secrets to Novel Writing No one Ever Told you"
12p Keynote speaker: The history of a love story
1p Lunch
2:15p Pitch Slam Session
4p "How to Make a Career Out of Writing Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror"

So I'll have 90 seconds with each agent I have the pleasure of speaking with to pitch my story, and they will in turn give 90 seconds of feedback.

Wish me luck!

If you were led to this post via a Google search or would just like to know more about how to pitch your story, I would suggest you go here, here, and here.

Rachel Ink

Don't you just love the simplicity of these notecards? I think they're gorgeous and the artist, Rachel King Birch, has an amazing variety of other cards, customized address labels, and tags, all in her original ink artwork. And you can also pick your own set of 10 assorted cards.

I love this one for Halloween:

And I think this one is my very favorite:

But don't take my word for it, check out the rest of her shop, Rachel Ink, on etsy.

Two Years!

(Central Park by Matteart on etsy. It really doesn't relate to my post but I just love this guy's art! More on that later!)

Today is the 2nd anniversary of my blog. It seems odd that it was such a short time ago that I created it. And I feel it rather a shame that it never got very far in the world of blogs. Not to say that I haven't met some very wonderful people who still so loyally follow my simple little blog. And it's definitely not to say that I won't continue with it in the years to come.

When I created this blog I had high hopes for it. Indeed, it was a place of creativity and refuge that I so deeply enjoyed. Just when it seemed things were progressing with my blogging, my whole world crumbled around me and everything came to a screeching halt. No doubt my blog has suffered somewhat because of the drastic changes in my life in the past year and a half (well, almost two years now). What with how very little activity there is in my life since I lost my job and the fact that I spend most of my time with my head deeply immersed in a world I have been creating for the past few years (that would be my fantasy novel), I've found I have little to share.

I know that my situation is only temporary, however, and I do hope you will all bear with me. I know I have been slacking in the area of blog commenting, which I will do my best to rectify as often as possible. But I will say ever since I got an iPhone, I've been finding more excuses not to log onto the internet on my computer (the only way I can really post on my blog), because my computer is so slow in comparison it's almost torturous. All this aside, I do hope you will all know I have not disappeared, and I'm sure by my 3rd anniversary, I will have had much more to share with you!

Have a lovely weekend!

Weekend getaway

Isn't this piece gorgeous?! It's by Brooknoel and it's called Summer Dances II. Check out her shop. She has some other amazing pieces that she's incorporated into covers for journals!

I'm off tomorrow to visit my friend, Angela, in Long Beach for the weekend, right after I get my hair done Friday morning, of course! Angela and I are both Lord of the Rings fanatics and we'll be watching the extended edition trilogy on Blu Ray :) Can't wait! It'll be nice to get away, and I haven't seen Ang in months! I wish you all a lovely weekend! Do you have any plans?

Color Inspiration

June's issue of House Beautiful had this gorgeous scarab beetle (I know, isn't it crazy to hear the words "gorgeous" and "beetle" in one sentence?!) for their monthly Paint Palette section. I still can't stop looking at it! And then I found that the artist, Christopher Marley, is absolutely amazing! (I particularly love the shells!)

If you had to choose one photo or item to base a color palette for a room on, what would you choose?

Artists on Etsy

There are some truly gifted and inspiring artists out there nowadays and I'm willing to bet a large majority of them can be found on Etsy. Here are some of my favorites from the art showcase for today:

Must have

I found this artist, Tina Tarnoff, on Etsy recently (I blogged about her shop a while back) and included this piece in the fairy tale treasury list I made yesterday. I want it so badly it's ridiculous! Needless to say, I'm a big fan of Peter Pan! This art is just incredible!

Papercut Art

I found a very talented San Francisco artist today by the name of Tina Tarnoff who does these incredible papercut pieces of art on Etsy. This piece above called "Autumn Kiss" is cut from one piece of paper! Charming and exquisite! I can't even imagine the amount of time it takes to make these. Love it!

Thankful for nature

I've been finding so much gorgeous photography on Etsy lately and this one just takes the cake. It's called "That For Which I'm Thankful" by Katya Horner in Texas. Stunning, no?

more Calvin & Hobbes on Etsy

I just recently finished this stipple drawing of Calvin & Hobbes and put a print of it for sale on my Etsy shop today. It makes me laugh every time I look at it :)  What do you think of it?

A time for color

So I've started a new series of butterflies, which have the same organic flow to them that my fairy logo for my business does. They're also very colorful, which is good because I need more color in my shop :) And they're fun to do because they only take a few hours and so they're easy to reproduce and I love to use marker. Plus, since they're so much easier for to make I don't have to charge so much for originals, which I think most people would prefer to buy, if they're going to buy art at all. What do you think?

New art on my Etsy shop!

I just finished this butterfly today! It made up entirely of little dots I have to use a special pen for. It took me two weeks to finish, but I love doing stipple drawings so that's ok :)  I have an 8x10 print available on my shop right now so check it out!

Christmas Eve with Calvin

I had to post this a little early today because I couldn't take the suspense either ;)  I especially love the comment about Calvin claiming "extenuating circumstances" lol. Oh, and that Calvin's Christmas list to Santa is 30 pages long....Oh, Calvin.

Winter is here

Happy first day of Winter! There's only four more days until Christmas! I'm excited regardless of my lack of money for gifts this year! I just love Christmas!! :)

Festive Calvin & Hobbes

It's going to officially be Winter in a few days so I thought I'd sneek this one in before it's too late. I'm on a Calvin binge because I got a new book for Christmas from a friend :)

And it seems that right now most people can probably relate to this one even if it isn't officially Winter yet:
